AT&T Navigator: GPS navigation for monthly fee on AT&T bill Review

Reviewed Version: 1.0i (iPhone OS 3.0 Tested)

GPS navigation app will get you where you’re going, but is inefficient and verbose

Ever since the iPhone 3G added GPS into its feature mix, users have been clamoring for turn-by-turn directions of the sort used by standalone car navigation units. While Google Maps can do directions, its lack of automated prompts and voice feedback means that it’s not ideal to operate when you’re the only person in an automobile. Not to mention that its map data is dependent on having an Internet connection, so if you lose cell reception, it’s bye-bye directions.

Macworld user reviews IN DETAIL:

ATT Navigator (Telnav) disappoints

The overall presentation of the Navigator on the iPhone vs. the Blackberry certainly takes advantage of the iPhone's obvious display advantages. HOWEVER, this version is sadly lacking in some important basic functions that are available on the BB. The key deficiency is the inability to use the contact database on the phone. you have to input each new address either on the phone or online and then search Navigator's favorites folder.Continuing with the contacts issue: you can't go to contacts and then ask for directions as you can on the BB. If you do ask for directions for a contact, you get google maps which lacks real gps functions such as voice and turn by turn tracking and directions.Too bad. This should have been a killer app on the iPhone replacing the need to travel with a standalone gps.

Good directions - tough to follow

My use of the navigator has shown that its directions are quite good, including telling which side of the road your destination is on, but the view defaults to such a short distance it is tough to see where you will be turning until you are almost on it.
