Macworld user reviews IN DETAIL:

Lacks the variety of a true first person shooter

The Doom experience comes to your iPhone/iPod touch. This is not just a mere port, it is rewritten from the ground up. It is a rail shooter, which means that rather than exploring on your own, your movements through the dungeon and corridor are done for you. The limitations of a rail shooter are, since it is not a freeform experience, the game tends to play more or less the same each time you run it. To make up for this, the developers have packed a lot of action into this gain, along with a comic book style storyline. The enemies come at you at a neverending pace, broken only by an advance of the story. Despite the furious action, the game does not have the variety or variation that a true first person shooter has. In addition, the power ops are very hard to get. You have to tap on them quickly, but they are displayed on the screen for only a very short time, and sometimes the game doesn't seem to respond to your taps. So you find yourself pecking away at your iPod's screen, sometimes accidentally firing your weapon, but still not gaining possession of the power up. The game was worth the price for the fun involved, but it's not the type of game I see myself as playing over and over again.
