Newtoy has a pretty sweet thing going with its burgeoning and addictive “Games With Friends” platform for the iPhone and iPod touch. The Dallas-based developer released Chess With Friends last year to much critical acclaim, including from me. Chess has improved substantially in the intervening months, and NewToy has reaped the fruits of that progress in its latest offering, Words With Friends.
I am a great fan of Chess With Friends and was very happy to discover this Scrabble variant based on the same principle - a very attractive and well-written app, with the ability to choose a human opponent or find a random one. Unfortunately I feel that human nature was not taken into consideration when designing this game - I suspect that either my opponents have all been Scrabble geniuses or that they have resorted to using one of the many anagram helpers available on the web. I don't mind losing the occasional game, but it really becomes tiresome to be constantly beaten by people who are not playing by the rules. I only hope that some way can be found to overcome this because I really don't feel like playing this again right now.
