CrèmeCurrent Version: 1.4

A new Twitter app for iPhone. The name, Crème, comes from “Crème de la Crème” /kʁɛm də la kʁɛm/, which is French for “The very best.”

Twitter is full of noise. And yet, there’s people and topics you care about. Read only what matters.

Follow @cremeapp on Twitter for news and updates.

FEATURES

CRÈME VIEW: The powerful Crème view gives you a quick overview of all the people, searches and timelines you’ve added to Crème, with clippings of most recent tweets in each for efficient scanning. Noticed an unread tweet? Just tap and read it.

ADD TO CRÈME: Following someone interesting has never been easier. Simply tap the handy “Add to Crème” button and the person or the #topic will be in your Crème.

SIMPLY TOUCH: Crème uses tapping and swiping. Swipe left or right to move between pages, or up and down to move within a page.

JUST DRAG: In Crème view, drag down to refresh all pages. Or drag up to add a page. On a single page, drag down to refresh it. It’s that simple, really.

FRESH LOOKING TWEET LISTS: Crème groups tweets by person. For a series of tweets, you see the name and picture only once. And, instead of showing exact time for each tweet, they are grouped into meaningful time blocks. This way you can enjoy more air for what matters—the written word.

CELEBRATE PEOPLE: The elegant, clear profile view in Crème shows a beautiful picture of your friends, together with the essential information, all on one simple screen.

TRACK THE UNREAD: Tweets seen in Crème are automatically marked as “read” and remembered throughout the application.

ARRANGE PAGES: You can add, remove and re-arrange the pages in Crème to the order that makes the most sense to you.

MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS: Switching your Twitter account in Crème view takes just a swipe. And with Twitter’s new, state-of-the-art PIN-based system, it’s super secure.

SHORTEN LINKS: Crème notices long links and automatically shortens them for you.

DISTRACTION-FREE LISTS: Feel like getting rid of the pictures in tweet lists? You can do that in Settings.

BED MODE: You can use Crème when laying down on your couch or first thing in the morning in your bed—it always stays in portrait orientation.

TRASH ‘EM!: For pages not worth being in your Crème any more, just put three fingers on the screen…

Crème Review

Great-looking Twitter app offers some unique feature

The iTunes store is flush with Twitter clients for iPhone and iPod touch, so it takes a little effort for a new app to set itself apart. Crème from Directionality Studios is a great-looking app with some unique features, though it’s not as full-service as one might hope for the price.

Feed Me: Creme lets you add different feeds from individual users, direct messages, retweets, and your own timeline for easy browsing.

When you first launch Crème, the app directs you to the Twitter Website to enter your login information and receive a PIN This security measure is meant to keep the app from knowing your account information, which is a nice feature. However, the PIN can’t be copy-pasted, so make sure to have a pen and paper handy to copy it down.

For most mobile Twitter apps, an account’s home screen features just a Timeline, or what you’d see if you checked Twitter from an Internet browser. But Crème is unique in that you can add different feeds to the home page. In addition to your timeline, you can see feeds from an individual user, or a feed with just your mentions, retweets, or direct messages, with each feed’s most recent tweet in a list on the homepage. This saves the hassle of clicking around to read your messages or get to a favorite user.

If someone's tweet particularly inspires you, the arrow button includes a multitude of actions for responding to it. You can reply to a tweet, quote it, retweet it, add it to your favorites, open it in Safari, or reply to the user with a direct message. Since Crème's last update, you can also bookmark it, which saves tweets in a special list you can access even when you're offline.

The interface is all done in shades of a muted gold color, with unread tweets highlighted. It’s both aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly, making use of the iPhone’s swiping controls to refresh tweets or edit preferences.

Despite these high points, Crème is not without its deficiencies. Surprisingly, the app doesn’t support tweeting pictures, nor does it add locations using the iPhone’s GPS. And, just as a personal preference, I found that feeds didn’t differentiate between tweets very much, making all of the little text boxes kind of blend together.

Crème still stands out from many other Twitter clients, though for the $3 price tag, I’m not sure that the multiple feed feature makes up for the lack of picture tweeting.
