Flight Control Review

Unique gameplay is perfectly suited to the iPhone and iPod touch

Flight Control, a $1 app from Firemint, wouldn’t exist without the iPhone. The unique gameplay is perfectly suited to the device, and I am hopelessly addicted. When I have a spare minute or two, Flight Control is the game I play. Go spend the buck and start playing—you can read my review later while nodding vigorously in agreement.

In Flight Control, you assume the role of air traffic controller. As an ever-increasing number of planes approach the runways, your job is to guide them all in for safe landings—ensuring that they stay out of each other’s way. Planes travel at different speeds, and each is color-coded to match the runway it must land on. You tap on approaching planes and drag a flight path for them to follow for landing. That flight path remains visible, and the plane turns white to indicate that you’ve successfully drawn a path to its runway.

Maverick, Goose—Look Out: A recent update to Flight Control added a particularly challenging aircraft carrier level to the game that puts you in the role of an air traffic controller.

But careful! More planes keep on coming. And helicopters—oh, those painfully slow-traveling helicopters—keep on coming, too. As more aircraft begin filling up the screen, you need to remain hyper-vigilant to make sure that they don’t collide. Luckily, you’re allowed to re-re-route planes as many times as you need, which you’ll find yourself doing repeatedly to avoid airborne pile-ups just shy of the runway. As you progress, this process gets increasingly manic… and not surprisingly, it’s tons of fun, too.

After a recent update, Flight Control now sports three levels (or “airfields”)—the original simple airstrip, a beachside resort with water landings, and the most hellish of all, an aircraft carrier. The military planes that show up on that last level fly faster than other aircraft in the game, and there’s not a lot of room to maneuver everybody onto the relatively tight ship. And when the tides cause the carrier to move a bit—good luck adjusting all those landing approaches in time! The other two levels can start out a bit slow. Flight Control wisely includes a fast-forward button that speeds up the action, which you can toggle at any time as you play.

Each time you successfully land a plane, Flight Control displays a cheery victory message, catered to the airfield you’re playing (“Commendable!” or “Outstanding” on the aircraft carrier; “Aloha” or “Bienvenue” at the resort; or “Good show!” and “Splendid!” on the original level. These assorted messages, and the deliciously retro menu and Game Over screens (complete with polite, congratulatory flight attendants), add a nice dose of personality to the game.

Of course, Flight Control saves your high scores (which translate to the number of planes you’ve successfully landed) on each level, and you can see how you measure up with online scoreboards. And since the game smartly saves your progress when you’re interrupted, you can achieve your insane high scores over the course of a few days, with breaks to eat and sleep.

My sole complaint is that Flight Control prompts me about whether I’d rather hear its soundtrack or listen to my own music each time I launch the game; I’d prefer a setting I could set and forget.

The game takes seconds to learn, and mere minutes to play. That makes it even more impressive that I’ve spent hours guiding planes in Flight Control and can’t wait to go play again.

Flight Control is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.x software update.

Amazing App!!

This was the first app I ever bought and I still love it!:)

Great game!

This is a highly addictive game where you think you can always do better so it brings you back for more. Quick games so it is easy to pick up and play. Perfect for the ipod touch.

Quite addictive!

This is the perfect game to be able to just pull out and play at any time for any amount of time. it's great fun, simple to learn, and you can't beat it at a buck!

Fun game!

Not much to this game, just guide the planes & helicopters to their landing strips or landing pads. Just don't have a collision! Easy game to play and a good time waster.

Awesome

This is one of the best applications for the iPhone. Fun, easy to play and challenging. Multiplayer mode is awesome too.

A ton of fun!

So addictive and fun you can't stop playing

Enjoyable Mini Game

Very entertaining when you are on the bus or in the subway. It's a fun game that never ends.

Super Fun

FlightControl rules. Highly addictive and challenging.

highly addictive!

I have many games on my iphone, but this one is the one I turn to most frequently. So often during the course of a week I have a few idle minutes to kill, and this is the perfect way! The controls are intuitive, and the graphics are simple but pleasant. I would say the designers could have picked a better word than the British term "Smashing!" when you successfully land an airplane, but then, that's nitpicking, isn't it? Worth the money - go for it!

Just buy it now.

This app is simple, yet amazing. A great way to waste time, or compete with friends.

Highly addictive time waster

This app is sometimes to addictive. My high score on the islands airfield is 104, and it took me a several tries to get that. It's a case of 'okay, one more try', which turns into several tries. Now that they have added an option to speed things up, it gets even more hectic. The pause button is a nice touch so you can relax, before resuming your game. I haven't yet tried peer to peer play. I convinced a friend to get this app and will be trying that feature out soon. I will post a new review on that aspect of the game soon. Enjoy!

It's gotta start somewhere...

Flight control is like Punch Out for Nintendo, if you had a Nintendo, you had to have Punch Out because everybody else did. Flight Control was the first to market this type and style of game that has since been mocked over by suck games as Harbor Master and Trains to name a few. This is a must own app for anyone, this game is a quick 2-5min killer of time if you find yourself waiting for a Train, bus, friend or any time you have a few minutes. The object is to land a slew of planes while you act as the air traffic controller plotting the different plane (and Helo's) paths to land. The more planes you land the higher your score. Easy at first but increasingly difficult as it progresses. A treat and a classic. This is the first app I tell people to buy when they first get an ipod/iphone.

BEST of the BEST!

Flight Control is probably the ONLY iphone game I have that I've had for a while and play repeatedly. It never gets boring...just more and more addicting! It's simple, and fun!

Best Game on The Phone

I have 7 plus pages of apps and this is by far the best game I have. It's cheap, addicting, fun and games don't take that long. The game requires real skill and anyone can play. You are a Flight Controller and you need to drag routes for the planes. It greats really hectic and fun. Play the 99¢ for this game you will not regret it!

My first iPhone addiction

This was the first game I really got into and wanted to play all the time. My interest has waned, but I often go back to it for a round or two. It's amazing that something so simple can be so fun. The desire to better one's high score is the motivation to keep playing it.

Good App

this is a very good application for the iphone that will take some time to be bored off.Its is amongst one of the best and well worth the 99 c you're going to pay for (99 c is actually cheap for this game(It's very user friendly and i recommend you buy it , you won;t regret it

Yeah, it's worth it!

Looks simple but it is so much fun! One of my favorites.

Great Game!

After about 20 seconds of playing Flight Control, I understood what I was supposed to do and how I was supposed to do it, without the help of the tutorial. The fact that this game is challenging but straightforward has been key to it's success, as well as the ability to submit and compare scores online without having to switching to safari and enter the company's website, which is a major annoyance found in other apps. Flight Control just got even better with P2P Co-op multiplayer. I look forward to getting more of Firemint's apps.

Easy to learn... Hard to master!

It only takes about thirty seconds to figure out how Flight Control works. Once that's over, you're just addicted to playing it! I've actually been too busy to play it since the recent update, but everything sounds very worthwhile.

ATC the easy way

This is a great app that I find myself coming back to all the time. They've added a fast forward mode now which lets you either speed up to make it harder or simply push thru the brief moments when all your aircraft have been routed. I really enjoy this game.

The only game I bought

This was money well spent. I am not a gaming freak not ever remotely. But this game has got me hooked. Even my wife loves it. We're just competing with each other on who lands the most planes. Simply awesome.

Great time waster!!!!

This app is great fun and provides continual excitement as more and more planes fly into the screen. The recent (as of 6-5-09) update adds two new airfields as well for added value. I woul have paid 3 bucks for this. A .

lot's of fun

this is a great game that is challenging and never gets old. with the interacitivity of a global leaderboard, and multiple airfields it is a great way to take a break a kill a little time.
