SportsTap Review

Reviewed Version: 3.0 (iPhone OS 3.0 Tested)

Scoreboard app makes solid debut, but lags behind SportsTap, Sportacular

A decade or so ago, I probably watched ESPN’s SportsCenter more than any other program on television. And really, why not? With a full hour devoted to highlights and scores from virtually every game played in North America that evening, SportsCenter was must-see viewing for any self-respecting sports nut of the mid-’90s. And, thus, it was must-see viewing for me. With few exceptions, it was the last program I watched before going to bed at night, and—on the occasions that I flipped on the TV before heading into work—it was the first show I saw in the morning. Gotta catch those highlights from the late games on the West Coast, you know.

Macworld user reviews IN DETAIL:

Well played ... with limitations

I have two sports apps on my iphone for checking scores: SportsTap and ESPN's Score Center. Both function well, but each has significant limitations. What's nice about SportsTap is that you can bookmark your favorite teams, and they show up at the top of the score screen. They are also highlighted when you look at standings -- an easy click from the screen displaying scores. It also has a nice "LocalTap" feature, which let's you check the scores of all the teams in your region. What's lacking is a simple "favorites" button. Perhaps I don't want to scroll through pages of pro and college football scores, but instead I just want to quickly see how my favorite teams in each of those categories fared. The app is also fairly limited in the number of sports to offer, so fans of sports outside the mainstream, such as rugby, are out of luck in this app. Finally, choosing favorite teams within a sports category is a fairly awkward process compared to other iPhone apps.Regardless, the app is well designed and does all the basics.
