Role-playing game offers unmatched depth

Zenonia recalls the good old days of the classic 16-bit role-playing game. Listed on sale for $3 as of this writing, Gamevil’s offering is a marathon adventure in character development, questing, and monster slaying for the iPhone or iPod touch. Zenonia has few rivals when it comes to depth, with more than 40 hours of gameplay, hundreds of unique items per character, tons of quests, a complex story line, and weapon upgrades.

Macworld user reviews IN DETAIL:

Not so much like Zelda...

Zenonia is not a Zelda style game. I happen to be playing Ocarina of Time now, and Zenonia simply has no puzzles, a large part of the Zelda series. Gameplay is simply running around, slashing bad guys, and occasionally casting magic. It's fun, but there a few points in the game where I felt I had to pause on the story to level up. This grinding is annoying, but wasn't that common. It is a Korean cellphone game port, which means the touchpad is not as precise as I would like, and the in-game menus have none of the ease of use that we are accustomed to. It is rather easy to get 40+ hours from this game, which makes $3 quite a deal. If you have the time, and want to get into an RPG, this is a good choice.

Zelda on steroids?

At first glance Zenonia may look like a shiny and polished version of good old 16bit Zelda. But after some minutes playing the game it becomes quite clear that Zenonia is more than that. The depth of this game is amazing compared to the majority of games available in the AppStore. Besides the nice Zelda look the game comes up with a huge amount of special items, a Diablo like skill tree, different daytimes (which actually affect some parts of the game), and the need for food. The story is not very innovative but does a really good job with it's lovely characters. Just the d-pad control could be a bit more precise and the tutorial should be a bit longer, because at the beginning I felt like having to discover most features and game mechanics on my very own.Nevertheless Zenonia is an excellent oldschool RPG. In my opinion it is even one of the best RPGs of the last few years. So if you like those classic RPGs, go and get Zenonia! ;-)

A good time waster!

Zenonia is a huge hit in parts of Asia and was ported over to the iPhone platform. It is a Zelda type game as far as combat goes. There are some quirks that take away from the game play. You are constantly having to eat to keep your mana full and your weapon/armor items have to be constantly repaired at the blacksmith. The biggest negative is the virtual d-pad, it is not very accurate. Even with these slight negatives this is a highly engaging game that has provided me with many enjoyable hours spent playing it.
