Wild West Pinball Review

Pinball wizzards and novices will enjoy this fun, eye-catching game

He’s a pinball wizard
There’s got to be a twist
A pinball wizard
He’s got such a supple wrist
—The Who, Pinball Wizard

Although never exactly a pinball wizard, I enjoyed the occasional bouncing of a steel ball around the table when I was young. So when asked by my kids what pinball was, I went looking for a modern version on the iPhone.

Going Tilt: Wild West Pinball offers a pretty faithful recreation of the pinball machine experience on your iPhone.

Wild West Pinball by OOO Gameprom looked pretty good, so I downloaded the $1 game and fired it up for the kids. They didn’t hear from me for over an hour.

Recreating the gameplay experience of pinball is simple enough—you launch the ball and hit it with flippers just like you would with a pinball machine. Wild West Pinball lets you work the flippers by tapping virtually anywhere on the sides of the iPhone screen, so you can easily find a comfortable playing position. That’s an important feature because the game allows the player to move the iPhone itself to simulate “tilting” the table. Because of that, I usually wind up writhing and twisting as I play the game to get the ball to do what I want—it must be hilarious for onlookers.

The app uses a moving camera view to follow the action of the ball, zooming in to where it rolls to give you a closer look at the action—closer, even, than if the game took place on a static table. Wild West Pinball follows the ball just like you would with your eye, and with an impressive 40 frames-per-second of 3-D graphics, it looks amazing. The sounds are realistic, and the physics of the ball movement are nearly flawless, making for an engrossing playing experience. Perhaps a little too engrossing—this is the first iPhone game where I’ve been tempted to throw the mobile device when I lose.

Certainly a more complex table, with more bumpers and bells and whistles would be even more fun, but this game has plenty to keep you coming back. I know Wild West Pinball will be keeping my attention for some time.

Wild West Pinball is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.1 software update.

Our user reviews IN DETAIL:

Needs some work

This game has potential, but the area between the flippers is way too big and it seems like my ball is constantly falling down the side chutes and causing me to lose. It's too unrealistic.

Awesome

Great game, this is the game I go to when I'm bored and need something to do, players can select to listen to their own iPod library. It's a fun and challenging game.

Great pinball simulator

This is a brilliant pinball game (or should I call it a pinball simulator?). The physics are absolutely real and it almost perfectly simulates the look and feel of a real pinball game. It makes me feel as if I am playing on a real table! It has an almost "artificial intelligence" like ability to zoom in on the ball at key moments and follow it around on the table to keep up with the action, and yet zoom out again when you want to see the big picture. It gives you the feeling of playing on a much larger table than something that fits in the palm of your hand. On the downside, it does not support tilt sensitivity, although this is not a big drawback, and launching the ball sometimes takes two or three tries. In all, this is held my interest longer than almost any other game I've tried.

Good fun game

This is a solid fun pinball game. The board has several fun areas to explore, though not as many as a true pinball machine. The controls feel great, the graphics look great, and this has solid replay value. It's a steal while it's on sale for free also.

Pinball away !

Very nice Pinball simulator which will give you many moments of fun play !It's not as easy as it looks to beat the high scores.Unfortunately the "Tilt" function of a real pinball machine is not supported. But besides that it's fun to play with your colleagues during the coffee breaks !Try to get your high score on top of the table !Get wild with Wild West Pinball !!!R:o)B
