Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum Review

Classic first-person shooter is right at home on the iPhone and iPod touch

Wolfenstein 3D popularized the first person shooter when id Software released it in 1992. Over the years, the game has been ported to a variety of platforms, and now it has found a home on iPhone and iPod touch under the name Wolfenstein 3D Classic.

Achtung, Baby: B.J. Blazkowicz is back and so are his well-armed Nazi adversaries in Wolfenstein 3D Classic.

Wolfenstein 3D Classic puts you in the boots of soldier William “B.J.” Blazkowicz; you must fight your way through six different episodes each with eight levels and a secret level. You’re armed with a variety of weapons to battle the Nazi soldiers, undead mutants, and other foes. Each episode culminates with a boss battle. To help you along the way you’ll pick up ammunition for your weapons and first aid kits and food to restore your health. There is also treasure to collect and secrets to uncover. Four difficulty levels provide additional replay value.

With a first person shooter, the most critical element of the game is the control scheme. Without a keyboard and mouse or joysticks, you’ll have to get used to the on-screen controls for this mobile version. Fortunately, there are a variety of control schemes each with variable sensitivity settings. You can elect to use tilt controls for either turning or strafing, thus freeing your thumb for the trigger; you can also use two control pads, though this requires you to move your thumb to fire. Despite this, I found this control scheme the most natural, and, after some practice, I was running and gunning almost as if I had a mouse and keyboard at my disposal

Gameplay, graphics, music, and sound effects are all faithful to the original versions. Don’t expect next-generation graphics here—this is retro gaming at its finest. Frame rates are high so the action is fast and smooth, and if you tire of the game’s soundtrack, you can elect to roll your own from your music library. Another nice feature is the ability to zoom in and out on the level maps with the pinch gesture—that’s something the PC or console ports never had.

All in all, id Software has succeeded in reuniting old fans with a classic and bringing new gamers a terrific first person shooter. (This version costs $2—what id bills as a limited time sale—and a lite version lets you play the first three levels of Episode 1 for free.) This bodes well for future id releases for the iPhone from its fantastic catalog of games.

Wolfenstein 3D Classic is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.x software update.

Our user reviews IN DETAIL:

Great port!

Wow, does this one bring back some memories! It is absolutely a fantastic port, however the last update caused some stability issues.

Could use more enemies

This is a faithful recreation of the classic Wolfenstein 3-D game for desktop computers. You are BJ Blaskowitz, sneaking through Castle Wolfenstein and killing off enemies. The controls are fairly good, although I wish you could move forward as well as side to side by tilting the device. Customization of the controls is also good. For the best customization, tap the controls button on the main screen and then tap the advanced button. This allows you to drag the controls anywhere you like. I like dragging the rotate commands away from the move commands and then using the tilt sensitivity of the device to handle rotating. Drawbacks of the game are that it could use more enemies. Many of the rooms are empty and you have to spend a lot of time backtracking through rooms and areas you have already been to. Also, the secrets are too well hidden and I know of no cheat to show them. Interestingly, this is a port of the PC version of Wolfenstein 3-D, not the Mac version. The Mac version had different music and the enemies always faced you. In all, worth the price if you are new to Wolfenstein.
