Mint.com Personal Finance – manage your money, budgets, expenses and bills Review

Stay on top of your finances when you’re on the goal

It never fails that those moments when you wonder about the status of your bank account never seem to occur within easy reach of an ATM. Thankfully, there’s Mint.com, one of several personal finance trackers vying for your attention in the App store.

Mint.com
Mint’s iPhone version is an extension of the Mint.com Web site, so you’ll need a Mint.com account to get started. It’s a free service, with features robust enough to challenge traditional competitors like Quicken or that old Excel file you’ve been adding to since 1998.

On the iPhone, the Mint opening screen presents you with an instant overview of your registered accounts, your monthly budget, cash flow and investments. All of these are initially set up on the Web site; the iPhone app simply tracks them for you. Clicking on any of these overviews gives you more details on where your money is going or has gone, even breaking data down by individual expenses. Mint will also alert you when you have gone over your budget or when you have reached a pre-set dollar amount.

The app’s user interface is friendly, simple, and attractive. Always nice to look at something pretty while watching your investments slip away, right?

Mint’s functionality is limited, however; don’t expect to be able to add transactions on the fly or adjust your budget when you find yourself spending too much. I have found that the information provided is not always current, and sometimes it’s downright slow. This can be a problem in an app designed to keep your finances straight.

Mint looks good and is easy to use and set up. It’s a fine option for keeping track of your finances on a casual basis, but for the most reliable and up-to-date information, you are probably better off relying on your personal bank Web site.

Mint.com is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.2. software update.

Our user reviews IN DETAIL:

Looks good, helpful, far too slow

The app is attractive and feature-rich to the extent that I was hoping for. However, I can't get over how terribly slow it is in downloading transaction information or updating my balance--even on a solid WiFi connection. The majority of the time I use this app, I give up before I receive any new information.

Nice looking site, if you can logon

Mint was fairly easy to setup, although getting it linked to my bank accounts took some time. It doesn't always recognize transactions properly. It still categorizes our mortgage payment as a "Large Purchase." One week ago, the site stopped recognizing my email address, and their technical support couldn't provide a timeline or even the certainty of a resolution: "I will forward your concern to our Engineering team for further investigation, if they can find ways to retrieve your mint account..."

Good app, small things will make it a favorite.

The website is definitely my go to tracker for finances, and it is nice to have that info on the go. but things that have already been mentioned, like a pin code, and graphs, would make this a great stand alone app. I must say i definitely recommend the site and am sure the app will catch up sooner than later.

Almost a great app

I love Mint.com. It is a fantastic way to manage your money and is a part of any great marriage, pie charts are much easier to discuss than spreadsheets or balance sheets! Since Mint is totally web based and is so functional and dynamic, I thought this app would kill. But there are no pie charts, and the views are limited. It is a good app, but it doesn't do service to the website. However, it is light years ahead of the bank apps. I hope to see an update that impresses the way the website did. Ditto on the pin code moj027, I hate to let friends play with my iPhone and i don't want to log in and out all of the time.

It's the little things

I really like mint.com, and this app is a perfect companion. however, the lack of a simple pin code security barrier when starting the app makes it so that i'm unwilling to keep it on my phone. they suggest turning on a pin code for the entire phone, which is simply lazy on their part. quickbooks app does this very well, but i don't like their product as much. as soon as the security lock is in the product, i'll re-install.
