ProCamera Review

App can steady those iPhone camera shots—if you don’t mind ceding some control

Let’s be honest—ProCamera is not the perfect solution for every issue you may encounter when taking pictures with your iPhone. And it doesn’t do a lot of neat photo trickery to make your pictures look better. All daemgen.net’s app tries to do is keep your photos focused and sharp.

Steady as She Goes: ProCamera uses the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer to figure out when you’re holding the phone steady, shooting the picture at that precise moment.
ProCamera uses the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer to judge when the phone is being held steady, and waits for that moment to shoot the picture—certainly an innovative use of the technology. There are different settings to adjust the sensitivity of the accelerometer and when it takes the shot, but why bother? Assuming you always want the sharpest picture possible, the highest setting works just fine.

A self-timer is part of the package, with a good and loud beeping countdown, perfect for taking the occasional self-portrait. The app also shows you a tilt-meter, a circular image that lets you know if your picture is on the straight and level. This is also a good indication of when you are holding the phone perfectly still, so you can get the app to take the darn picture, already. If you don’t have a very steady hand to begin with, it can take a while before the app decides you are ready and steady enough to actually shoot. Blurry or not, this leads to some missed opportunities. Adjusting the accelerometer sensitivity helps speed things up a little, but that would seem to defeat the point of having an app whose purpose is producing the steadiest shot possible.

If keeping your phone straight and getting constantly blurry images are big problems for you, ProCamera may offer a solution to your camera troubles. If you are looking for more control over your images in addition to that nifty self-timer, you may want to look elsewhere.

ProCamera is compatible with any iPhone running the iPhone 2.1 software update.

Our user reviews IN DETAIL:

Considerably updated since the Macworld review

This app has had so much added since this review was posted... an FX lab and minor edits (crop, rotate, white balance, etc) can be done right in the app. Much more, it's worth a look. The only thing I dislike is that there's no way to *delete* a picture once it's taken. You have to exit and go to your photos app to do that. If that was included then this would be a near perfect camera app.

Rules iPhoneography!

I love it! Let's me forget that Camera was once there.. Looking forward to more effects.. Absolutely recommended.. Jeff/MacWorld should update the own review as it is totally out of date!

Straight-to-the-point

Does what is says. Very sleek and intelligent software! My system camera app is replaced by ProCamera!

Best photo tool available!

It is really easy to use but is so packed with features, plus the videos and photos are brilliant in any respect..

More than just a still camera

While Macworld's review is basically on the mark, the reviewer left off a couple of features that may raise the star score a bit. This camera app is also a video camera app. A simple shake of the iPhone switches the app from still camera to a video camera, a fairly important feature which is also a part of the native iPhone camera. This way you don't have to close ProCamera, then open the iPhone camera to quickly switch to video if needed. Another good feature of this app is that it gives you an option to save or delete a picture as soon as it is taken. Also, ProCamera includes a compass. This app has two big cons in my opinion. First, having to shake the camera to get into video mode. A toggle button, similar to the iPhone camera, would be a whole lot easier and faster to switch modes. It often takes a couple of shakes. The second is the zoom control. Instead of a slider to smoothly zoom, you have to use your thumbs on two buttons, one positive, one negative, at the bottom of the viewer. It's easy to push the wrong buttons directly below these buttons. The zoom is jerky and not smooth like some other camera apps I have used. Having said this, I believe the video option makes this a good camera app to consider.
