Scoreboard app makes solid debut, but lags behind SportsTap, Sportacular

A decade or so ago, I probably watched ESPN’s SportsCenter more than any other program on television. And really, why not? With a full hour devoted to highlights and scores from virtually every game played in North America that evening, SportsCenter was must-see viewing for any self-respecting sports nut of the mid-’90s. And, thus, it was must-see viewing for me. With few exceptions, it was the last program I watched before going to bed at night, and—on the occasions that I flipped on the TV before heading into work—it was the first show I saw in the morning. Gotta catch those highlights from the late games on the West Coast, you know.

Macworld user reviews IN DETAIL:

ScoreCenter Hits a Home Run

While ESPN was late to the game with ScoreCenter, they sure know how to make a fashionably late entrance. The app functions extremely well with lightening fast accessibility. Users can custom ScoreCenter for their favorite sports scores, news and headlines. The graphics are great and are up to the standard of ESPN's SportsCenter. The drawbacks are that there is no video highlights or push notices for news and scoring updates. Rest assured, they are working on that though. Keep in mind, this is a FREE app. But MLB coverate on ScoreCenter combined with Game Cast for ESPN beats the socks off of MLB.com's At Bat. This app truly feels like an portable extension of SportsCenter with the Bottom Line crawl. Overall ScoreCenter is an app that lives up to the ESPN reputation.

Good effort but needs some improvements

I use several sports score apps, each with advantages and disadvantages. For the ESPN ScoreCenter, there are nice features including scrolling news headlines at the bottom and a wide variety of sports to choose from. It also much easier to select your favorite teams than some of the other apps, though you cannot select multiple teams at once, which is a pain. The app does a nice job of displaying scores, and connects to ESPN's Mobile Web, which has just about everything you could need and overcomes a lot of the problems with the app itself. Some portions of the app are awkwardly designed; for example, I have to scroll through multiple pages to see scores of NCAA football teams, because the teams are broken down by conference. This is ok, but I really only want to see the scores of my favorite teams without having to scroll through multiple pages. Further, the app doesn't have a home page; so I have to scroll through multiple sports to get to the ones I want. A home page to navigate is sorely needed, as well as a function on the home page allowing users to briefly look at their favorite teams.Within the pages, it would also be useful to link to standings in each division. With a few improvements, this could be a highly useful, beautiful app, but it's not there yet.

Great scores app

This is a really solid scores app. Once you specify the teams and sports that you're interested in, it only shows the sports you care about and puts your teams on top. It gives lots of great information and for baseball (the only sport I've really used it with so far) it opens the live gamecast in the app and gives pitch by pitch updates. Great app!

Disappointing effort from the sports leader

maybe it's just hard to write a sports score app. Mos-- sportstap, sportacular-- are pretty buggy and hard to use. When I saw ESPN had completed a scores app, i was excited. Until I opened it up and saw how poorly designed it was. Only positive are the scrolling stories like on ESPNews at the bottom of the App. As for the scores, non-intuitive interface, with awkward scrolling, soemtimes up and down, sometimes left to right. guess I'll wait for Fox Sports to give it a shot...
