Interactivity, distinctive visuals set apart apps from Moonbot Studios
Numberlys The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris...Spend any time with some of the iOS apps created by Moonbot Studios, and you get the sense that the developer really has a passion for words and stories. From The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore to the more recent release Numberlys, Moonbot’s visually striking apps convey a love for language and an appreciation for how story-telling can add color to our lives.
Weathermob
Talking about the weather is so mundane it’s almost a cliche. But Weathermob is looking to change that with Weathermob, the company’s namesake app that’s taken weather small-talk to the next level by creating a network of weather-minded users around the globe.
SHADOWGUN
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: In Shadowgun, you play as a wise-cracking, bald-headed space mercenary who saves the universe from a mutated cyborg army.
Dr. Seuss Band
Dr. Seuss’s books endure because of Theodor Geisel’s penchant for crafting pitch-perfect, brilliantly-metered, and endearingly silly rhymes. That his most famous books are the ones that also include his own whimsical artwork is no coincidence. Many of his best books are available in iOS app form, and they’re consistently ranked well in the App Store.
Disposable Hipstamatic
Remember disposable cameras—you know, those plastic film cameras people used to carry around on vacation, where the roll had to be developed before you could see the prints? Sure, they may still make the odd appearance now and then, but you'd probably be safe in adding them to the list nearly obsolete gadgets. But while the technology may be on its way out, the style of images it produces has definitely made a comeback.
GymPact
The new year is underway and the gyms are filled with new faces which, unfortunately, may never be seen again in a month or two. Maintaining your motivation is always the hardest part of a new workout routine. Luckily, there’s now an app for that.
Infinity Blade II
Infinity Blade II, Chair Entertainment Group’s sequel to 2010’s convention-defying swordplay game, is as big and beautiful as ever. The original Infinity Blade proved that a challenging, beautiful, and big fantasy game could succeed on the iOS platform. Now, Infinity Blade II refines the gameplay, beefs up the role-playing elements, and proves that the original title was not a fluke.
GroupShot
Taking a group shot is a tricky task that even the bossiest and most in-control photographers struggle with. When you have more than a handful of people in a photo, there’s no guarantee that all of them will be smiling (with teeth, please!), have their eyes open, and most importantly, be looking at the camera in a single one of your shots. Macadamia Apps has released GroupShot for iPhone to solve your group photo woes.
iBooks
Whenever I’m asked to review an e-reading app, my first reaction hovers around snarky amusement. “Come on,” I say to myself. “If it shows text and you can read books, it’s a fine e-reader.” That I conduct this inner monologue each time I’m charged with such a review is clearly a personal failing—especially because I’m wrong. The ideal e-reading app should become as invisible as a paper book can, but not shy away from offering the advantages that only digital books can.
CaptureNotes 2
This might be the golden age of premium note-taking applications for the iPad. Apps like Pear Note and Notability give students, journalists, and writers extremely handy tools for recording and writing up lectures and interviews. CaptureNotes 2, a $5 app from G8R Software, joins the top tier of such offerings with some cool new moves of its own.
Codosaurus
As a web developer, I often need access to my web servers from my iPhone or iPad. I rely on iSSH and LogMeIn Ignition to administer my Linux and Windows servers, but I occasionally need a tool for editing web pages when I’m on the go. Enter Grilled Bacon’s Codosaurus, a $6 universal iPhone/iPad app that does precisely that. (A free feature-limited “lite” version is also available.)
Pet Shop Story™
TeamLava's Pet Shop Story is a cute business simulation game where you are in charge of creating and stocking a pet store full of decidedly adorable creatures and critters. Unfortunately, the game is crippled by its slow pace and a rather restrictive freemium business model.
DataVault Password Manager
Your personal data can never be too secure, especially when it’s on a device that’s with you everywhere you go. DataVault Password Manager is a $10 app for both the iPhone and iPad that stores all of your bank account, credit card and log-in data, encrypting it using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). DataVault has Mac and Windows clients, too, which it syncs with using MobileMe, WebDAV, WiFi and file sharing.
