Batman Arkham City Lockdown

3.0 out of 5
12413 User Reviews

Rocksteady Studios earned the praise of critics and gamers alike for finally creating a game series where players felt like they were actually Batman—Rocksteady’s console games offered stealth, Batman’s iconic gadgets, and even multiple-enemy brawling. But NetherRealm Studios seemingly ignored all of that when designing its spin-off iOS version Batman: Arkham City Lockdown. In this iPhone and iPad app published by Warner Bros., Batman’s gadgets are limited to quick-time event interludes, there’s no stealth to speak of, and every battle is between Batman and a singular goon.

Buzz Contacts

Buzz Contacts takes two of your iPhone’s basic functions—mail and text—and does them better.

Viddy

When Viddy launched last year, there was much talk about it being the “Instagram for video.” While it would be easy to dismiss these claims as just a lot of hype, one year after its launch, Viddy has amassed more than 26 million users thanks, in part, to an array of celebrity endorsements. Even Mark Zuckerberg has a Viddy account (something I imagine not many social networking apps can say). And some recent estimates have valued the company at as much as $200 million.

TransFire XP

The first problem with TransFire XP, an iPhone app from TNT Creations that’s ostensibly aimed at helping you communicate with friends who speak different languages, is that it’s terribly obtuse. Finding your way through the app is more than a chore, it’s the iOS equivalent of backbreaking work. I’ve spent hours with the app, and still don’t feel qualified to teach you quite how to use it. My process is: Fiddle with things until they work.

Wunderkit

3.5 out of 5
261 User Reviews

Wunderkit helps you work. That’s what a productivity app should do, of course, but some unnecessarily bog you down in details. In contrast, Wunderkit—a free iPhone offering from 6 Wunderkinder—makes it easy to create projects and schedule tasks. And it’s better than many competing apps at recognizing the realities of the workplace.

Cubemen

3.5 out of 5
208 User Reviews

Developed by 3 Sprockets for the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad, Cubemen is a stripped-down strategy and tower defense game. The geometric cubemen of the game’s namesake are divided into two competing forces that do battle on grid-like, multi-dimensional levels. The goal of each stage is to defeat the enemy forces while defending your spawn point.

ChannelCaster Personalized News Mashup

3.0 out of 5
25 User Reviews

The best news aggregation apps make it very easy for you to assemble your favorite social networks and news sources into one attractive package. ChannelCaster—a free offering for both the iPhone and iPad from OneLouder—doesn’t quite measure up to that standard. At least, not yet.

FaceMe Backgammon

Backgammon is a board game that is perfectly suited to iOS devices. The shape of the board fits the iPhone and iPad, and the gameplay—rolling dice and moving pieces—is greatly simplified when you tap to perform these tasks. Over the past few months, I’ve tried out a number of backgammon apps, and two stand out: Backgammon NJ (available for the iPad in a separate version called Backgammon NJ HD), and FaceMe Backgammon.

PDFpen

215 User Reviews

Mac users should be more than acquainted with PDFpen, the feature-packed PDF offering from Smile Software, that’s become a credible alternative to Adobe’s Acrobat PDF creation software. Now iPad owners can enjoy all that PDFpen has to offer on their devices as well.

Adventure Bar Story

3.0 out of 5
294 User Reviews

Adventure Bar Story from RideonJapan looks like a classic JRPG, but with a crucial difference. You’re not an adventurer who happens to take part in a cooking/crafting mini-game—you’re a chef who goes on adventures to support her restaurant business. Wandering the wilderness and killing monsters yields ingredients to toss in the oven once you get back home. Characters don’t gain levels through combat, but through eating the food you prepare. Your first nemesis is not an evil sorcerer, but a rival restauranteur.
