Nisus Writer 6.0

Those who've refused to pay allegiance to Microsoft Word but who still need powerful text-handling capabilities most likely have chosen Nisus Writer as their form of rebellion. Version 6.0.1 contains a few new features -- perhaps enough to satisfy current Nisus users -- but probably not enough to convert any of the Word faithful.

Je m'appelle Nisus

As with previous versions, Nisus Writer 6 supports a staggering variety of languages, as long as you have the proper Apple Language Kits installed (available on your Mac OS Install CD). And the new version has an editable, 2,500-word AutoCorrect glossary that works behind the scenes to correct your keyboard missteps. There's also a long-awaited document zoom feature, but strangely, it displays zoomed text in a new window rather than in your active-document window.

Word Buster? Nisus Writer has a rich palette of features not found in other word processors. The Catalog window (left), gives you drag-and-drop access to documents.

Nisus Writer now has a Catalog window, which allows you to navigate your hard drive, open files, and drag them onto an open Nisus Writer document without once having to use an Open dialog box. The program also offers extremely easy-to-use functions for creating indexes and tables of contents. If you select portions of your document and mark them to be included in your index, you can index the entire document with a single command. Nisus Writer's clipboard lets you store and edit as many as ten different clippings.

The program does have some limitations. The Table tool, which is actually a separate application, remains problematic -- you still can't split a table between two pages, and you can't create tables nearly as easily as in Word or AppleWorks. Also, the program's many tool-bar buttons are confusing. There is no simple way, short of turning on balloon help, to decipher a button's function. Nisus Writer now uses Apple's Help Viewer for documentation; however, because the Help documents haven't been indexed, you can read through them but you can't use the Search feature to find specific terms.
