QuickTime Broadcaster works hand-in-hand with QuickTime Streaming Server to provide live encoding of QuickTime content. This can be used to share content on your local network or on the Internet, depending on your needs.

QuickTime Broadcaster delivers MPEG-4-compliant audio and video content, and can also hint its content for video on demand (VOD) after its initial live broadcast. It supports multicast and unicast via RTP and RTSP transports, provides real-time statistics, and can support QuickTime codecs capable of streaming and real-time compression. It supports video sources including DV cameras and FireWire-based analog to DVD converters, and supports analog input from USB, DV from FireWire and analog sources.

Apple's information about what has changed in QuickTime Broadcaster 1.0.1 is scant, but the company acknowledges that the new version "provides improvements to live broadcast recording and streaming, as well as enhancements to the user interface."

QuickTime Broadcaster requires Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server v10.1.5 or later; a G3 or better; 128MB RAM; and QuickTime v6.0.2 or later. The file is about 1.0MB in size.
