The makers of Macworld magazine have a new digital publication aimed at Macintosh software developers called, appropriately enough, Mac Developer Journal. A sample from the first issue has been posted online called Add features fast with AppleScript Studio, and it's penned by Apple's own AppleScript Product Manager Sal Soghoian.
The multi-page article provides an introduction to how AppleScript Studio works in Panther, and offers a step-by-step tutorial that walks readers through the process of altering Apple's own TextEdit application to support a new menu that allows users to use TextEdit to search iTunes libraries and the iTunes Music Store for information, then automatically import album art into TextEdit documents.
"By using the AppleScript Studio features of Apple's Xcode, you can easily expand the depth and reach of your application by integrating it with other programs. This article will demonstrate the step-by-step process for enabling AppleScript Studio interfaces and methods in an Xcode project," writes Soghoian.
Soghoian's tutorial has users edit and link the application interface, build and run the script they've created, and also provides other ways to embed scripts in applications.
