Apple iTunes giveaway features iPods, PowerBook, more

Apple is getting ready to mark the sale of the 100 millionth song from its iTunes Music Store, and the company is marking the occasion with 50 iPod giveaways and a giveaway package that includes a PowerBook, iPod and a 10,000 song gift certificate. The giveaway will be open to iTunes Music Store users in the US, UK, France and Germany. The company also announced that it's moved 1.5 million songs since its European iTunes Music Stores opened two weeks ago.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that Apple wanted to thank its customers for the iTunes Music Store's success with the giveaway. "iTunes is pulling even further ahead of its competitors, and it's all due to the wonderful customers we have."

Apple said that the iTunes Music Store will have sold 95 million songs sometime on July 2, 2004. Starting then, Apple will give away 50 special 20GB iPods, one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song between 95 million and 100 million songs. What's more, the customer who hits the 100 million mark will get a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, and a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs. They'll also get a chance to create their own Celebrity Playlist to be published on the iTunes Music Store.

The iTunes Music Store opened in the UK, France and Germany about two weeks ago. A week later, Apple announced that the new service had sold some 800,000 songs since opening. Apple noted Thursday that the European versions of its iTunes Music Store have sold 1.5 million songs since their opening.
