Aspyr: Doom 3 reaches beta

Aspyr Media Inc. on Thursday said its Macintosh conversion of the hit action game from id Software Doom 3 has reached its beta development milestone. Doom 3 -- the first Mac game to require a G5 processor, according to Aspyr's preliminary specifications -- is expected to be released in February, 2005.

Doom 3 is a retelling of id's original Doom tale, feature a spectacular new graphics engine that takes advantage of the latest advances in graphics acceleration. An archeological expedition on the surface of the planet Mars has revealed evidence of an ancient civilization. You're a marine sent to protect the facility, but something goes horribly wrong -- nightmarish creatures have somehow invaded, and it's up to you to stop them from reaching Earth.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later, G5/1.5GHz or faster, 384MB of RAM, 2.2GB free hard disk space, ATI Radeon 8500 or Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 or better 3D graphics with at least 64MB VRAM, and DVD drive to install and play. Rated M for Mature by the ESRB, Aspyr's conversion of Doom 3 is already available for pre-order for US$49.99.
