PDFpen 2.0.1

Portable Document Format (PDF) files are a simple and elegant approach to distributing forms, instructions, and other information. But manipulating PDF files and filling out or creating new forms can be difficult, unless you’re using a straightforward utility like PDFpen 2.0.1.

SmileOnMyMac corrected all of version 1.0’s glaring deficiencies: the program’s speed boost, effective search tool, and page manipulation improvements make this version a much better product.

Managing an existing PDF file with PDFpen’s well-designed user interface is effortless. To re-order pages, simply drag and drop individual pages to their new locations. To add pages, use the Insert command, or drag a page into the document from another PDF file. Divide a multi-page document by choosing Split PDF from the Apple Script menu and PDFpen creates individual PDFs for each page in a folder of your choice. You can also search PDFs using PDFpen’s lightening-fast Find tool.

Creating new PDF files with text, forms, or images is simple. Select a new blank document and use a variety of text or drawing tools to add data. You can also include watermarks and images.

PDFpen also takes the hassle out of faxing. Think of the last time you received a PDF form via e-mail that you had to fill out and return. You likely had to print it, fill it out, and fax it back to the sender. With PDFpen, simply choose the text tool and highlight the areas to fill in, type your data, adjust the text placement, and modify the font (PDFpen uses Apple’s Font panel). Need to import a signature image? Simply choose the Insert command, select the file, and adjust the size as necessary. Then, save, email, fax, or print. Sending a fax is easy using the OS X fax program.

Technical support is prompt: they responded to an e-mail inquiry in eight minutes.

Macworld’s Buying Advice

PDFpen 2.0.1 offers a variety of tools to let you easily create, use, and interact with PDF documents and forms, at a reasonable price. A Pro version, which gives you additional form tools to create fillable Adobe Acrobat-compatible PDF forms, is twice as expensive.

PDF pen lets you organize multi-page PDF files with smooth drag-and-drop simplicity.
