LaCie has introduced the Biggest S2S, a five-bay SATA II RAID external storage tower that can can handle sustained transfer rates of 187MB/second. The new storage system, compatible with Macs and PCs, will be available in mid-August in 1.25 Terabyte (TB) and 2.5TB capacities, and will cost US$1,999 and $3,499 respectively.
The Biggest S2S touts hot-swappable drive bays and a hardware-based RAID controller. It can be configured as a RAID level 0, 0+1 or 1 system, or as a JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks). The Biggest S2S includes LaCie’s own SATA II PCI-X Card 4E.
LaCie says that the Biggest S2S can support uncompressed HDTV 1080i and 1080p video editing. It includes LEDs for each drive, showing host connection, fault indication and power indication. The drive includes a SATA II external cable, CD-ROM with user’s manual, power cable and quick install guide. It’s compatible with Mac OS X and various flavors of Windows.
