San Diego, Calif.-based Veoh Networks Inc. has released Veoh 1.0 Beta for Mac OS X and Windows. The software creates a “virtual television network” that can be used to distribute video across broadband Internet connections.
The company hopes the new service will appeal to movie studios, TV networks and video webcasters. Veoh Networks calls the technology “peercasting.” Veoh is based on a peer-to-peer transfer architecture similar to point-to-point (P2P) networks — publishers don’t have to host servers or RSS feeds.
Although Veoh publishers don’t have the ability to charge for their videos with the beta, the company said that’s the plan for the public release of the software.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later, 256MB RAM and 10MB hard disk space. Publishing using Veoh requires 20Kbps or greater upload speed and broadband-quality download speed.
