Power management software goes Universal

MGE UPS Systems has announced the release of a Universal binary version of their Solution-Pac Power Management Software. A free download, it’s intended to provide users of MGE’s Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) hardware with software that runs natively on Intel-based Macs.

Paired with an MGE-made UPS connected to the Mac via USB, the Personal Solution-Pac software appears on the Mac as a system preference panel. The software can be configured to display user alerts in the event of a power loss, and triggers “an orderly shutdown” to prevent damage from occurring to your Mac or software setup.

You can verify the UPS connection, view a power event log and set the battery level threshold that will trigger a safe shutdown using the software. It’s already been available for PowerPC-based Macs for a while; this announcement notes the release of a Universal binary.

MGE also offers more sophisticated management hardware using centralized UPS systems and remote control via a Network Shutdown Module (NSM).
