Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) on Tuesday announced the release of its 3ware Sidecar SATA II desktop storage system, a desktop RAID for Power Mac G5 available in capacities up to 3 terabytes (TB) with RAID Level 5 support. The system costs $1,295 unpopulated (that is, without any drives installed).
The 3ware Sidecar is a four-bay external SATA desktop enclosure. It includes a two-meter SATA multi-lane cable, a PCI Express-based SATA II RAID controller and RAID management software. The controller card enables the system to be configured as a hardware-based RAID drive, for improved performance under load and better reliability.
AMCC expects the drive to appeal to video producers and other content creators looking for fast, reliable external storage for the Mac.
