Apple posts Mac Pro firmware updates

Apple on Tuesday released Mac Pro (mid 2006) EFI Firmware Update 1.0, Firmware Restoration CD 1.1 and Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update.

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update makes a change to the Mac Pro’s System Management Controller (SMC) firmware, which controls power and thermal management, including the fans and other internal hardware. The update changes fan behavior in the Mac Pro — after completing the update successfully, your SMC version will be 1.7f8.

The Firmware Restoration CD 1.1 is a CD disc image that can then be transferred to a black CD or DVD. Using it, you can restore the firmware of an Intel-based iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, MacBook or Mac Pro to its original condition — helpful if you need to restore the firmware after an interrupted or failed update. It is advisable to download this 14.5MB file and make a disc before making any firmware changes to your Mac.

Mac Pro (mid 2006) EFI Firmware Update 1.0 makes changes to the Mac Pro’s Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) — firmware code that helps the operating system control the Mac’s core hardware technology. This update fixes several Boot camp issues, according to Apple, as well as startup issues. Once applied, the Mac Pro’s Boot ROM version should be MP11.005C.B01.
