Other World Computing (OWC) on Thursday introduced the Mercury On-the-Go USB2+eSATA Portable Drive. The drive is available for $117.99 to $229.99 depending on capacity and specs.
Mercury On-the-Go drives are external, bus-powered hard disk drive enclosures (although the included AC adapter is needed for eSATA operation). Inside they feature 2.5-inch hard disk drive mechanisms running at 4200RPM to 7200RPM, with either 8MB or 16MB of data buffer. They’re useful for mobile users or users who are looking for small, fast external drives.
Most of the Mercury On-the-Go drives sport FireWire 400 and some other interface — USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800 and USB 2.0. These new drives tout a USB 2.0 interface and external Serial ATA (eSATA) instead — eSATA provides markedly faster data transfer rates than even FireWire is capable of, depending on the drive mechanism. eSATA requires an adaptor card on the Mac, as Macs currently don’t include an eSATA port.
OWC includes ProSoft Engineering’s Data Backup for Mac OS X, a data backup and archive software application. Also included is Intech Hard Disk SpeedTools, a utility bundle.
