Sanyo offers waterproof digital camcorder

Sanyo on Tuesday unveiled its Xacti E1, a digital camcorder and still camera that is waterproof to a depth of five feet for up to one hour at a time. The Xacti E1 is expected to ship in mid-June for $499.99.

The Xacti E1 shoots video in MPEG-4 and uses the H.264 codec. It’s “tapeless,” recording digital video and six megapixel still JPEG images onto an SD or SDHC memory card. It can record up to 10 hours of 640 x 480 30 frame per second video on a single 8GB SDHC card, according to Sanyo, and it connects to a Mac or PC using USB 2.0.

The Xacti E1 shares a one-handed pistol grip-style design with other Xacti cameras, and comes in blue, yellow or white designs. The E1 doesn’t require an additional housing; the unit is completely self-contained and is waterproof right out of the box.

The Xacti E1 sports its own 2.5-inch LCD color display that flips out and rotates, a 5x optical zoom lens, digital image stabilization, and 16:9 (2816 x 1584 pixel) photo setting.

The camera measures 2.8 x 4.4 x 1.6 inches and weighs 8.3 ounces with its battery and memory card in place.

Sanyo’s Web site had not been updated with information about the new E1 model as Macworld posted this article.
