Adapter lets CardBus cards work in MacBook Pros

Addonics has introduced their ExpressCard to CardBus Adapter, a device that enables ExpressCard-equipped laptops like the MacBook Pro operate CardBus expansion cards — designed to work in the PCMCIA card slot found in 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBook models. It costs $69.95.

The device plugs into any available ExpressCard slot, and features a slot on the end that extends from the opening of the MacBook Pro that’s wide enough to accommodate a 32-bit CardBus expansion card instead. Such cards have been made to support wireless networks, eSATA, FireWire and more. The adapter does not support 16-bit PCMCIA cards such as ATA Flash, 4-in-1 DigiAdapter and CF DigiAdapter cards.

The adapter supports Type I and Type II CardBus cards and is hot-pluggable. It works with Mac OS, according to Addonics’ press release, though the Web site hasn’t been updated to reflect that.
