New FAA battery rules also impact DV pros
Anthony Burokas, writing on the TechThoughts blog, notes new FAA regulations regarding lithium-ion batteries for camcorders that could have far-reaching consequences for professional camera operators who want to travel with spares when they fly.In his detailed post (and associated rant about the arcane nature of the new rules), Burokas notes that:
“You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage.
“You can also bring up to two spare batteries with an aggregate [add up to] equivalent lithium content from 8 up to 25 grams.
“The limits are expressed in grams of ‘equivalent lithium content.’ 8 grams of equivalent lithium content is approximately 100 watt-hours. 25 grams is approximately 300 watt-hours.
“[What this means is that] they may take your $500 160 WH Battery and keep it.”
Burokas also references a number of studies regarding lithium-ion safety testing, and the ironic fact that, while the FAA is pursuing this path with air travelers, there appears to be no current regulations regarding batteries and commercial cargo shipments on passenger planes.
