Nova offers USB HSUPA wireless modem

Nova Media is now offering the GlobeSurfer Icon HSUPA, a USB-based wireless modem that supports High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). It costs €299 (US$475.80).

The GlobeSurfer also supports 3G UMTS, EDGE and GPRS networks, so it can work on most high-speed cell phone data networks around the work, according to Nova. HSUPA enables the device to operate at up to 7.2 megabits per second (Mbps) download speed and up to 1.4 Mbps upload speed.

To connect to a network, you need a SIM card from a cell phone; software included with the device enables you to set up and control the connection. Nova includes its launch2net software to get the device up and running — launch2net includes more than 300 connection settings for networks worldwide.

A USB extension cord is also included if have have to move the device away from the host Mac, to prevent it from blocking adjacent ports, for example.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4.3 or later. It’s also compatible with Windows.
