Summer of Mac Gems 2008

Editor’s note: The following review is part of Macworld’s Summer of Mac Gems series. Each business day until the middle of August 2008, the Macworld staff will use the Mac Gems blog to briefly cover a favorite free or low-cost program. Visit the Mac Gems homepage for a list of past Mac Gems.

Compared to the myriad note-taking and data-storing utilities out there, Coding Robots’ Mémoires 1.1.40 is quite limited in features. But its simple interface makes it ideal for keeping a basic personal journal.

Just click on a date in Mémoires’ calendar and then click the plus (+) button to create a new entry for that date.

Entries provide the same formatting options as TextEdit, including embedded images—you can even insert multi-page PDF documents in the body of entries.

A speedy search feature instantly finds entries containing your search text; you can also find contents using Spotlight.

Mémoires can encrypt your data using AES-128 encryption to keep your private thoughts private, and it can import data from Journler ( ) or MacJournal ($35).
