Macworld Expo & Gear Guide
In the U.S., the food-gorging holiday has passed and the gift-giving holidays loom. And because they do, we devote a major portion of this episode to Macworld’s Gear Guide, the annual, product-packed feature that also serves as a handy reference of desirable holiday gifts for the Mac, iPod, or iPhone-loving loved one in your life.
Not content to address one major winter event, we then move on to a discussion of the season’s other highlight, Macworld Conference & Expo, held each January at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. Expo’s General Manager, Paul Kent, clues us into what’s in store.
I also use this episode to inaugurate a new feature of the Macworld Podcast—Mac 911 Takes To The Air! If you’re a Macworld reader you’re familiar with my Mac 911 tips and troubleshooting column and blog. Mac 911 Takes To The Air is the audio extension of that work. You ask, I answer, we all learn a little something.

You’re intrigued by Mac 911 Takes To The Air, right? Good. Here’s how it works. You call 415/520-9761 and detail your problem (technology problems only, please) as thoroughly yet succinctly as possible. At the end of the message, provide your e-mail address so I can contact you if necessary (and that would be only to give you stuff). Alternatively, record a message on your Mac and e-mail that recorded message to me (I tell you how in the podcast). If your issue is juicy enough, I’ll play it on the air, provide an answer, and send you a little something as a thank you.
Dan Frakes and I talk a mean mess of products. Many of them can be found in our Gear Guide. We’ve published that Gear Guide in four parts. They include gear for your iPhone, gear for your iPod, gear for the mobile Mac user, and gear for the desktop.
We have also recently published a series of buying guides. They include the Mac Buying Guide, iPod Buying Guide, Inkjet Buying Guide, Digital SLR Cameras Buying Guide, and Point-and-Shoot Camera Buying Guide.
Those products that Dan I talk about that don’t appear in the Gear Guide include the Belkin Mini Surge Protector with USB Charger, Western Digital 320GB My Passport Elite, Brenthaven MetroLite BP, Boston Acoustics Duo-i, Kensington Portable Power Pack for Mobile Devices, Mophie JuicePack, Incase Power Slider, SoundMatters foxL, Altec Lansing inMotion MAX, Koss KSC75, and Sennheiser HD201.
To learn more about Macworld Conference & Expo, the Web site of the same name is the best place to go. And although the topic didn’t come up in our discussion, Paul leads a rockin’ band in Silicon Valley named, aptly enough, The Silicon Valley Houserockers. I’ve played with them a time or two and they live up to their name.
