KQED Quest Science Video Podcast
KQED is the big PBS channel in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Quest series covers science happening in Northern California. From this series, you can get the scoop on various topics—from the science of chocolate to Graham Hawkes’s “submarine with wings.” Another notable podcast was all about ladybugs (surprisingly interesting). This podcast is a quick way for science geeks to keep up on the latest discoveries and inventions, and the best part for me is that it covers science happening in my backyard.—Sue Voelkel

Torchwood - Children of Earth
The third season of the BBC Doctor Who spinoff is only five episodes long, but Torchwood - Children of Earth is five explosive episodes set up in a miniseries-style arc. Torchwood, a secret agency of the British government dedicated to defending the world from alien invaders, is under fire from within the government as forces seek to bury evidence of their complicity in a plot involving an alien threat and the children of Earth. It's five non-stop action-packed hours with plenty of twists and turns in plot and genuine drama, and precious little of the melodrama and rubber-suited bad-guys that have punctuated the previous two seasons of the show.—Peter Cohen
Get It: Download Torchwood - Children of Earth from iTunes for $9 (standard definition) or $14 (HD). You can also purchase individual episodes.
