MotionX GPS Drive is among the Swiss Army knives of navigation apps, providing a dozen options where other programs might provide one to four. Nonetheless, the developers have kept the program relatively simple to use with some glitches.

The sequence of buttons on the bottom of the app list are illustrative of minor interface trouble. They are Find (for POIs), Go To (for selecting a destination), Maps (for viewing), Compass, List (for text directions), and a gear for settings. After starting navigation, one must switch to Maps instead of Go To, and click on List to access excellent iPod controls.

The lack of traffic data explains why MotionX is cheaper than both other subscription services—GoKivo and AT&T Navigator—both of which integrate congestion and speed information.

MotionX also inexplicably doesn’t include among its 15 Go To destination options the ability to select a point on a map, something the company includes in another GPS product it sells for a different purpose.

MotionX’s low cost of entry and low price makes it worth trying, but it needs some improvement to become one of our recommended apps.
