Eddy and App Gem Awards
As 2009 winds down to its inevitable Champale-soaked conclusion, we stop to take a look back at the year that was. Specifically, Macworld’s Editorial Brain Trust—Jason Snell, Philip Michaels, and Dan Miller—gather in the Podcave to discuss Macworld’s Editors’ Choice and App Gems awards.
After a word from Macworld Superguides, I take a few moments to compare the musicality of some popular microphones by dangling them over my piano and plunking out a few holiday carols. Feel free to sing along.

During the holiday carol segment I recorded my noodling with a vintage AKG C 414 EB using CEntrance’s $150 MicPort Pro XLR-to-USB interface, Marshall Electronics’ $400 XML USB.009, Blue Microphones’ $100 Snowball, the internal microphone found on Apogee’s $249 USB audio interface, One, and Samson’s $299 Zoom H4n Handy Recorder. I played a Steinway & Sons Model O piano.
(Note: Any audio artifacts you hear are due to the audio encoding we use for the podcast and are not the fault of the microphones.)
I happened to have these microphones on hand in order to make recommendations in Macworld’s Favorite Podcast Tools.
