Boxee beta heads to the Apple TV
Apple TV users, rejoice—the Boxee beta has now made its way to your favorite set-top device.
In the past, you could install the free Boxee media-center application (based on the open-source XBMC) on an Apple TV using a USB thumb drive and the atvusb-creator software. I did just that with the alpha version of the software, and soon after found myself using the Apple TV much more frequently. It was no longer a niche hobby product I used whenever I wanted to rent a movie, but a fully featured media station.
Sadly, when Boxee introduced its beta version in December 2009, the Apple TV had dropped from its “supported devices” list. But no longer—the device is once again officially supported and Boxee’s Website offers step-by-step instructions. I know what I’ll be doing later today. (According to Boxee, In if you already have alpha version installed, you should be able to update Boxee directly from the Apple TV.)
For those without an Apple TV, Boxee also runs on Intel Macs running 10.4 or later and PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (plus Ubuntu Linux). You can download it now from the Boxee site.
