Case-Mate's Signature Leather Case for the second-generation (2G) iPod nano may look slick, with its sleek leather exterior, but when it comes to protection and compatibility, this case comes up short.

Available in black, white, red, or pink, the Signature case is clearly intended to complement the nano's aesthetic appeal. The front of the case has a large opening that stretches from above your nano's screen to slightly below the Click Wheel, allowing a clear view of the former and access to the latter. The top of the case is open, allowing you to slide your nano in and out, as well as to access its hold switch; an open bottom provides access to the dock-connector port and headphone jack. The back features a removable, rotating belt clip.

The Signature case has some problems, though. For one thing, the opening at the bottom of the case is far too small to fit thicker headphone plugs or third-party dock-connector adapters. On the model I tested, I couldn't even get a firm connection with the iPod's own dock cable. My nano also didn't seem to want to go as far into the case as it should have, and no amount of coaxing or mild force fixed that.

Besides problems of accessibility and fit, I have concerns about the case's protective abilities. The opening on the front of the case exposes quite a bit of the nano's face. Though clear adhesive protectors are provided for screen and Click Wheel, these are thin and do nothing for the rest of the nano's exposed face. The construction of the belt clip also feels somewhat on the flimsy side.

Putting all of these concerns together makes it difficult to recommend the Signature case. If you particularly like the looks and styling of the case, you might be able to overlook its shortcomings, but most users who care about their iPod's safety will be better off looking elsewhere.
