Dropbox Anywhere brings new apps and a mobile API

Dropbox, the cross-platform cloud storage and syncing service, has announced new official apps and Dropbox Anywhere, a new endeavor by the company to make its service accessible on the go across a range of mobile platforms and third-party apps.

On the apps front, Dropbox released an updated version of its official app for the iPhone that added support for the iPad as well. It also released an official client for Google’s Android platform and announced that a BlackBerry version is scheduled to ship this summer.

Making an effort to spread to even more applications and platforms, Dropbox Anywhere is a new API that allows third-party developers to incorporate Dropbox. Third-party apps may now utilize the Dropbox API to access, download from, and upload to your Dropbox account. Given Dropbox’s reputation for reliable and fast synchronization of files across various devices, this means that you will always have the latest version of your files, no matter where you are or which app you choose to access them from.

The Dropbox API is currently available on an invite-only basis, and interested developers can sign up to be notified of availability on the company’s Website. Several iPhone and iPad applications—such as GoodReaderQuickoffice Connect Mobile SuiteDocuments To Go - Office SuiteFuze MeetingAir Sharing HDDictamus - Dictate & Send, and JotNot Scanner—have already been updated to take advantage of the Dropbox API, with more expected to be released as it becomes more widely available.
