Valve: Mac games make up 11 percent of Steam purchases

Last week’s launch of Steam on the Mac has been a huge success for the platform. But this week, Valve revealed several interesting facts about the first week of sales on the Steam service.

Valve says that more than 11 percent of all Steam purchases are for the Mac in a post on its Steam blog. Nothing more than a first week rush from curious Mac users, you say? Maybe, but things look pretty encouraging for the Mac market when you take a few facts into consideration.

For starters, the only Valve flagship game to be released so far has been Portal, which was released as a free download. It’s unclear if the 1.5 million downloads of Portal are included in that 11 percent figure touted by Valve. Second, Valve still hasn’t released its other marquee franchises for the Mac yet, including Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Half-Life 2, or Counterstrike: Source. So Valve hasn’t thrown all of its chips into the pile yet.

In fact, earlier this week, more games became available for the Mac on Steam. The headliners this time around are cross-platform multiplayer games, including Killing Floor, Altitude, and Madballs in Babo: Invasion. All three games are also currently available at reduced prices for a limited time.

“We were thrilled when we learned that Steam was coming to the Mac platform and started working on a native Mac version of Killing Floor immediately,” said John Gibson, President of Tripwire Interactive, creators of Killing Floor. “Steam’s advanced multiplayer support on both the PC and Mac has enabled us to bring Killing Floor to a whole new audience on the Mac and introduce them to the existing PC player community.”

Several single player games have also recently been made available for download on Steam. These include Episode 2 of the latest Sam & Max Adventure series, The Devils Playhouse. The full list of newly released games include:

  • Madballs in Babo: Invasion
  • Killing Floor
  • Altitude
  • Europa Universalis 3
  • Hearts of Iron 3
  • Sam & Max Season 2
  • Sam & Max Season 3 - Ep. 2
  • Chains
  • Simplz Zoo
  • Caster
  • Eschalon Book 1
  • Windosill

All the above games support “Steam Play,” meaning you can play them on your Windows PC and the Mac with just a single purchase. Steam will augment its growing game library every Wednesday, so keep checking the Game Room to see what’s new.
