ioSafe releases disaster-proof Rugged Portable SSD, HDD
If you’re looking for a hard drive that will protect your data during a level-five disaster, ioSafe’s Rugged Portable should be on your short list. Built to withstand nearly any misfortune a hard drive could encounter, the Rugged Portable is available in aluminum HDD and SSD or titanium SSD models, and sports the kind of multifaceted protection that would make James Bond proud.
Just how rugged is the Rugged Portable? For starters, the drive’s enclosure is CNC-machined from solid billet, and is crush resistant to 2500 pounds for the aluminum model, and to a staggering 5000 pounds for the titanium model. On the impact-protection side, ioSafe’s Full Suspension Drive Technology protects your data from drops up to 20 feet for the SSD model, and 10 feet for the HDD model.
These are impressive stats on their own, but ioSafe didn’t stop at mere crush and impact protection. The Rugged Portable can withstand immersion in fresh or salt water for up to three days to a depth of 10 feet for the aluminum model, or 30 feet for the SSD or titanium model. It can even withstand immersion in diesel fuel, oils, hydraulic fluids, and aircraft fuels to a 12-inch depth for up to an hour. Furthermore, the drive can survive continuous exposure to UV, blowing sand, blowing dust, rain, salt fog, icing, or freezing rain for up to 24 hours, and can operate at altitudes up to 15,000 feet for the aluminum model, and 30,000 for the SSD or titanium models.
The drives support USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, with a FireWire version expected in March 2011. The HDD version is available in capacities between 250 GB and 1 TB, while the SSD version is available in capacities of 256 or 512 GB. Prices range from $1299 for the 250 GB aluminum HDD model to $3500 for the 512 GB titanium SSD model, and all drives come with an extendable 12-month data recovery warranty.
