Verizon, on the same day it began and then halted pre-orders for the iPhone 4, started airing an ad in which the Verizon Guy holds up an Apple smartphone and says “Yes, I can hear you now.”
The ad, a twist on the familiar “Can you hear me now?” commercials, gushes over the “beautiful” and “intelligent” iPhone, then poses the question of “Does your network… work?”
Verizon last month aired its first iPhone ad, celebrating the patience of its customers who withstood months of rumors that the Apple smartphone would come to Verizon’s network.
Verizon and AT&T have had a history of going after each other through advertisements over the years, with AT&T even filing suit vs. Verizon in 2009 over its claims that AT&T had big gaps in its wireless network.
Customers flocked to Verizon and Apple’s Websites starting Thursday to pre-order the iPhone 4 for use on Verizon’s network, and while it was smooth sailing for some, many others wound up seeking help and airing gripes on online forums.
The iPhone proved to be so enticing to Verizon customers that the carrier and Apple halted pre-orders because their initial inventory for these customers has been exhausted already.
Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless said it was throttling back bandwidth available to its biggest data hogs to ensure good service quality for the masses. Some connected this with Verizon’s impending support for iPhones on its network, which will surely boost network usage massively, as it did on AT&T’s network. Though Verizon said the new bandwidth rules and the iPhone sales are unrelated.
