Developed as a thin, stylish reflection of Dodocase's bookbinding sensibilities without the bulk of a full case, the $25 Dodocase Bookback for iPad 2 is a slim piece of moleskine-esque Moroccan book fabric that clings to the metallic back of your device using reusable adhesive. It can supplement Apple's Smart Cover, providing protection for the iPad's backside.
However, due to the iPad 2's curved edges, the Bookback covers only the center of the iPad's backside, with cutouts for both the rear camera and the speaker, leaving the outer edges of the back exposed. (In contrast, the Bookback for both the iPhone 4 and the original iPad extend to align flush with the sides of those devices.). Similarly, applying the Bookback to the iPad 2 was a tad tricky—unless you have a good eye and steady hands, you may find yourself with a slightly crooked top edge. Thankfully, the adhesive lives up to its reusability, so if you mess up your first application, you can easily peel off the cover and try again.
In hand, the Bookback's limited surface area gives the iPad a disjointed feel—you can distinctly discern the edges of the fabric. The cut also makes the back of the iPad look less elegant than its predecessor does with a Bookback applied.
The Bookback's texture is its standout feature, making the iPad 2 feel less slippery. And there's something to be said for ebook reading on a device wrapped in what feels like an old book jacket. However, on the whole, the iPad 2's curved design really hurts what would otherwise be a very fine offering from the folks at Dodocase.
