The Week in iPad Cases: (Mostly) Natural edition
We're back with another edition of our weekly iPad case roundup—this time with a heavy dose of natural materials such as bamboo, hemp, and the ever-popular leather. If you love the feel of the stuff Mother Earth has given us, well, it's your week.
Then again, if you happen to think that technology begets technology, and that your iPad deserves the best materials mankind has been able to manufacture, we've got a good selection for you, as well.
Blackbox Case: The Bamboo (iPad 2; $99) is a case made entirely by hand out of—you guessed it—bamboo at the company’s headquarters in Colorado. Available both in a natural finish or in “carbonized brown,” this case will keep your tablet clean and safe thanks to its soft interior and laser-cut leather strap. Hardy and environmentally friend, the Bamboo is compatible with Apple’s Smart Cover.
Cocoon: The Grid-It (iPad 2; $25) combines a carrying case with a clever arrangements of straps that make it easy to organize and transport all your accessories, from cables to power supplies to sunglasses to keys to wallets. It’s available in black, grey, or red.
The Sleeve2 (iPad and iPad 2; $70) is a convenient carrying case, available in black or red, that's designed to accommodate a 13-inch MacBook or MacBook Pro. It features a front pocket big enough to store your iPad or iPad 2 and also includes a Grid-It to organize all your accessories.
Elago: The Note (iPad 2; $90) is a folio-style cover made of beautiful leather that also plays host to an old-fashioned paper notepad and pen. The ambidextrous construction lets you orient the contents of the case so that the notepad can be on the left or right, while a set of cutouts provides access to all of the iPad’s ports, buttons, and cameras. The Note, which also features a secure closure to keep its content safe, is available in brown or dark brown.
iChair: With a tagline that reads “You Sit. It Stands,” this accessory can’t possibly go wrong! The iChair (iPad; $50) is a lightweight but sturdy slide-on case that works as a typing platform as well as a stand in either landscape or portrait orientation. It features dual-layer construction for maximum protection and comes in a package that includes an extra slider, a screen protector, a dust cloth, and even a squeegee board. It's available in black, white, or blue.
iChic Gear: This company’s line of cases (iPad; $50) features simple but elegant construction that protects your device and doubles as a typing platform or a convenient landscape-mode stand. Each of the cases in this collection features a different interior lining, available in red, grey, green silk, fuchsia silk, blue silk, or black silk. A denim version of the case—with a grey-felt interior—is also available for those who like a sportier look.
Incipio: The Executive Premium Kickstand (iPad 2; $60) is a folio case made entirely out of black or brown leather. The case can be used as a stand in landscape mode (with three different angles) or as a typing platform. A series of cutouts ensures ready access to all of the iPad’s ports, buttons, and cameras, while the case’s three sturdy clips ensure a solid fit without having to struggle during installation.
The Kickstand is also available in a more environmentally-conscious format (iPad 2; $40) that replaces the leather with a synthetic material. In this case, the company offers three color combinations: black, dark grey, or light grey.
SGP: Looking for screen protection? SGP has you covered with three different models of its transparent films (iPad 2; $22), each compatible with every iPad 2 model, with or without a Smart Cover. The Ultra Crystal features a reinforced, glass-like construction that provides maximum light transmittance, while the Ultra Optics has a matte exterior that avoids glare and helps reduce smudges and fingerprints. Finally, the Ultra Fine sports a fine texture that diffuses ambient light and maximizes light transmittance for a crisp image under all light conditions.
Speck: If you like your case to come with its own healthy dose of personality, you’ll want to check out the iGuy (iPad and iPad 2; $40), which looks like it might want to shake your hand at any moment. The anthropomorphic design, available in blue, mango, or lime, provide maximum shock protection and several convenient gripping locations for holding your tablet, regardless of whether your hands are big or small. It's ideal for letting your children enjoy your iPad without worrying too much about whether they'll inadvertently drop it.
Tuff-Luv: The Multi-view Stasis (iPad 2; £35) is a folio made almost entirely out of high-grade natural hemp. Like most folios, the Stasis can be used as a viewing stand in landscape orientation, where it’s capable of holding up your device at one of five different angles ranging from thirty to seventy-five degrees. A leather flap can be used to fasten the cover—which is also compatible with the iPad’s magnetic sleep/wake feature—when your tablet is not in use, keeping the latter safe at all times.
Uniea: The Caj Pad (iPad 2; $50) is a denim case with a design clearly inspired by Apple’s Smart cover. The Caj protects your iPad 2 on all sides and features a foldable front that can be used to prop up the tablet in multiple orientations. Strategically-placed magnets support the iPad 2's magnetic sleep/wake feature, and the case includes all the appropriate cutouts for access to ports, buttons, and cameras.
The U-Suit (iPad 2; $45), on the other hand, is made entirely out of leather and sports a slightly different design, with the front providing notches into which the iPad can be rested to provide multiple viewing angles. Like the Caj, the U-Suit also supports the iPad 2’s magnetic sleep/wake feature and provides cutouts for all ports, buttons, and cameras. The U-Suit is available in white, grey, or brown.
Zenus Case: The Masstige (iPad 2; $60 and up) is a fine leather case that doubles as a typing platform or a viewing stand in landscape oritentation. It’s available in several different colors and models alongside the company’s Prestige (iPad 2; $30 and up), which also features a hand strap on the back for easy carrying.
