Knomo 11" Leather Envelope for MacBook Air
At a Glance
Knomo's $80 11" Leather Envelope for MacBook Air is sturdy, cushioned, and attractive. Made of brown leather with a cloth-and-velvet interior, the landscape-orientation sleeve provides a classy way to carry your laptop by itself or inside a larger bag. (Oddly, the Leather Envelope doesn't appear on Knomo's website; however, it's currently available in U.S. Apple retail stores, as well as from Apple's UK online store at the above link.)
The Leather Envelope is a bit heavier than most other offerings for the Air, owing in part to the 15mm of shock-resistant foam on each side that protects your computer from bumps and drops. When holding the sleeve with the Air inside, the package feels almost like a leather-covered mattress pad. I had no fear of tossing my encased Air in a bag full of other items, and while I decided against dropping it on the floor to test, it could probably survive a fall of at least a couple of feet.
The interior of the sleeve is lined with a crushed, brown velvet and serves to keep the MacBook Air nice and snug, while a leather-and-fabric flap snaps closed to keep the computer from sliding out. Knomo offers a nice additional feature on the interior of the flap: a unique identification number. If a good samaritan happens to stumble upon your lost laptop, they can call the number stitched inside, and Knomo will contact you and help facilitate your laptop's return.
My only complaint about the case is one of weight: By itself, the Leather Envelope weighs almost a third as much as the MacBook Air; combine the two and your ultralight laptop becomes slightly less ultralight. That being said, the sleeve provides a nice home for your Air and would look great on any office desk.
