If John Wayne had an iPad 2, he would carry it in Saddleback’s $104 Leather iPad 2 case. And then he would use it for target practice because he’s John Wayne and he would never need an iPad to look cool. Luckily, you don’t have to be a cowboy to appreciate sturdy leather goods, and if you have some spare cash, you can buy this extremely rustic iPad case.

At two-millimeters, the leather folio case is super thick and adds a substantial amount of weight to your iPad. It is held closed by two straps that fold from front to back and slip into two back pockets. When the straps are positioned correctly, the case can actually be propped up in a landscape-viewing mode, if you want to watch Rio Bravo or Lawless Range for the tenth time. To match its vintage look, the cover does not support the iPad 2’s magnetic Sleep/Wake function. The leather comes in four classic colors: Carbon Black, Chestnut, Coffee Brown, and Tobacco Brown.

The Saddleback Leather iPad 2 case has openings for the volume buttons, front and back cameras, speaker, and 30-pin dock-connector port—but mysteriously, none for the home button. Because of this curious design decision, you need to press down extra hard on the area that covers the Home button in order to use it. While this might be good for parents who want to keep their kids from messing with their iPad, it’s a huge annoyance for most other users. It was for me, at least.

If you’re looking for a no-frills, semi-functional, and unbearably old-timey home for your iPad 2 at the expense of Home button access, then this is your case. But for everyone else, there are many more practical options at much better prices. On the plus side, Saddleback Leather boasts a 100 year warranty: “It’ll outlast 30 iPads,” the company website claims. No word on whether the warranty is voided if you use it for target practice with John Wayne.
