The Week in iPhone Cases: A look back to the future
As the speculation grows about what the next iPhone will look like, when it will come out, and what its features will be, I can make one prediction with some certainty: There will be a slew of new cases for it, and Macworld will be there to cover them for you. Until then, we’re keeping an eye out for new cases for the current iPhone. Here’s this week's iPhone-case roundup.
Arm Pocket: People on the move will appreciate the convenience provided by Arm Pocket's Sport i-20 (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $30), which allows you to conveniently strap your iPhone to your arm alongside your keys, wallet, and anything else that fits in the case's 20 cubic inches of moisture-proof space. It comes in two different sizes to fit arms of different girths, and it’s available in black, fluorescent yellow, khaki, blue, orange, pink, purple, or red.
Brando: The Luminous Batman Phone Case (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $25) features DC Comics's classic Batman symbol and glows in the dark, making it easier to find your phone when the lights are off (and, of course, to get assistance from history's most famous vigilante superheroes). This snap-on case wraps around your iPhone, protecting both the back and sides, with cutouts and openings that provide unhindered access to all the phone’s ports, buttons, and cameras.
Hex: The Hundreds x Hex Code Wallet (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $55) combines the convenience of Hex's wallet case, which incorporates a set of four convenient pockets for carrying plastic cards and paper money, with The Hundred's colorful street art. The outside of the case sports a beautiful textured pattern, while the inside is built to provide excellent protection for your handset. The case is available in black, and it includes cutouts and openings for all the iPhone's ports, buttons, and cameras.
Keyway Designs: From the Great Canadian North—home of the polar bear, Wayne Gretzky, and Tim Horton’s coffee—comes the Backboard (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $55), a line of back plates made entirely of real-wood veneer. The plates come in a variety of different woods, including black palm, bocote, bolivian rosewood, mahogany, walnut, and zebrawood. To better match your handset, each of the plates features a bezel in either black or white.
Loop Attachment: The Loop Mummy (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $25) is a case designed to make your iPhone look like it just came out of an ancient Egyptian tomb in a Joel Schumacher film. Made of impact-resistant rubberized plastic, the case features an improved grip and comes with a special pocket where you can store plastic cards. It's available in neon green, red, graphite, magenta, powder blue, neon blue, orange, purple, black, or white.
Qmadix: The Xtreme Protective Case (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $35) features a dual-layer construction that provides maximum protection: The silicone shock absorber protects your device from unexpected encounters with hard surfaces, while the external sheath's rigid structure keeps it safe from punctures. The case even includes a built-in stand for propping iPhone up for easy viewing. Finally, the case comes with a holster that makes carrying your handset a snap thanks to its durable, ratcheting, swivel belt clip.
USBFever: The Retro Gaming Case (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $23) takes you back to a time when your gaming and your phone calls were not purveyed by the same device. Those old enough to remember the days of fixed LCD screens and piezoelectric beeps won't be able to resist USBFever's latest offering, which will make a wonderful conversation starter—at least until the person you're talking to realizes how old you really have to be in order to remember those gaming devices.
X-Doria: The Defense 360º (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $30) provides complete wraparound protection for your iPhone—including its screen, which is completely encased and protected from scratches, dust, and rough handling. Despite the full coverage, you still maintain full access to all of your handset's ports, buttons, and camera, and you can continue using its touchscreen without any limitations. The Defense is made of tough, transparent polycarbonate, and is transparent throughout; it is available in clear, blue, orange, graphite, or pink versions.
Xhibt: This company specializes in iPhone cases that are built using techniques inspired by traditional bookbinding. The case lineup includes the Inspiria Metallic (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $50), which features a solid bamboo frame and comes in five exterior and seven interior colors, as well as the Classic Case (iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S; $40) which sports a more conservative look and is available in your choice of eight different interior colors. Both cases can be monogrammed with a word of your choosing for a small additional fee.
