Narrator 2.0 text-to-speech utility released

Dejal released Narrator 2.0 on Monday, adding several new features to the text-to-speech utility. Narrator uses Apple’s speech synthesis to read documents to users.

Dejal says that Narrator allows users can have a range of “actors” that can portray any number of “characters”, so various passages of the document are spoken with differing voices, pitch and inflection.

Narrator 2.0 adds numerous features including export to iTunes, complete with track attributes, including lyrics; added an export to a AAC sound file; support for multiple chapters in each document; support for Spotlight and Quick Look; and new dictionary preferences, allowing substituting words or phrases to better fine-tune the pronunciation.

Narrator 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.5 and costs $19.
