Clone-maker Open Tech up for sale

Open Tech, a company that planned to sell desktop computers “fully capable of running most popular operating systems,” is up for sale, according to an e-mail send to Macworld on Saturday night. Although the company didn’t offer to install OS X on its Open Tech Home and Open Tech XT systems, it did tout OS X compatibility as a selling point.

The e-mail from Elijah Samaroo, Open Tech’s president of online sales an PR, reads: “Open Tech is For sale. This includes all trade secrets and brand equity. Thank you for tour [sic] time.”

Although Open Tech’s Web site says “Purchase Open Tech Computers at our Web Store,” there isn’t a link on the site for purchasing systems. It’s also not clear if Open Tech has sold or shipped any computers yet.

Open Tech is the second company recently to offer a non-Apple-branded computer capable of running OS X. In July, Apple filed suit against clone-maker Psystar, accusing the company of violating Apple’s copyrights and license agreements, as well as inducing customers who bought the OS X-running Open Computer to do the same, by selling computers with OS X pre-installed.
