Vocalia lets you speak French to your iPhone

We all know that it’s tough to find a contact when you’re doing something like driving, but you know what’s even harder? Trying to find a contact while you’re driving in France. Though there are a bunch of voice-dialing applications on the App Store, Creaceed’s released the first one to recognize you en français, Vocalia.

The latest version of Vocalia, 1.2, adds support for French among other features. So if you’re trying to find the phone number for Jacques Chirac or Gerard Depardieu without paging through a lengthy list of contacts, you’re in luck. Then again, if you prefer to stick with l’anglais instead, well, c’est dommage, mais il marche aussi. Vocalia works pretty simply: just speak the name of the contact you want to dial, and it’ll try to match it to your address book all without having to rely on even having a network connection. You can even define vocal shortcuts for contacts, so that you can say “Mom” (or, if you prefer, maman) or “Le Steve” for when you need to ring up Steve Jobs. And if it doesn’t give you the results you want, just give it a shake and you can try again.

Vocalia 1.2, complete with support for the language of love, is available on the App Store now, where it’s priced at a special discount rate of $4 until November 24th (at which point, it jumps back to its normal cost of $8). It requires an iPhone with the iPhone 2.1 software update.
