Apple adds top app lists to App Store categories

On the heels of heated discussion over the App Store’s current organization, Apple has apparently made some adjustments to the ways that it presents some content in the marketplace.

The major change is the addition of lists of Top Free and Top Paid applications to every category of applications. For example, going into the Social Networking section of the store will give you the top twenty free and paid applications on either side of the main listing. Clicking on an arrow at the top of either list brings you to a page that lists the top 100 free or paid applications in a given category.

Apple has been listing top free and paid aplications on the front page of the App Store since its inception last July, as well as maintaining top 100 collections for both, though it’s not known exactly what algorithm Apple uses to determine an app’s rating.

The addition of these categories may help address issues that some developers have raised about the App Store’s organization, but on the other hand, it may just reinforce the fixation on the importance of these listings.
